In 1911, Louis Upton and Emory Upton combined forces to create the Upton Machine Company. Louis had recently acquired a patent for a manual washing machine, and with an investment from Lowell Brassford they made the transition to include electric motors. This marked the beginning of what we now know as Whirlpool – one of the world’s leading appliances brands.
Louis Upton and his uncle Emory founded the Upton Machine Company in 1911, which later became Whirlpool. Initially relying on Federal Electric as its main customer, they then acquired Sears, Roebuck & Co to expand their reach. Merging with Nineteen Hundred Washer Company of Bingham, New York in 1929, and undeterred by the Great Depression and WWII conversions, Whirpool flourished. They released a new spinner-type washer under the ‘Whirlpool’ name in 1948 and known today as Whirpool Corporation.
Over the years numerous brands were acquired – like Seeger Refrigerator Company, RCA air conditioners and cooking ranges, KitchenAid, Inglis and Maytag – culminating with the Kenmore brand being launched in 2017 when Whirlpool celebrated its 100th anniversary.
